Notting Hill Villa

Dating from 1850, this elegant villa forms part of a carefully composed group of semi-detached Victorian residences to the north of Notting Hill. Its stuccoed façade and balanced proportions reflect the restrained sophistication of the Italianate style, where classical harmony meets subtle detailing.

Timber sash windows with fine margin panes are framed by understated plastered quoins at ground level, while the first floor is punctuated by graceful Juliet balcony doors with delicate ironwork, evoking the refinement of an Italian piano nobile.

The property exudes timeless character and quiet elegance, a distinguished example of mid-19th century craftsmanship in one of London’s most sought-after neighbourhoods.

The Brief

Having recently acquired the property, our clients sought to refurbish the house to accommodate the needs of a family of four. The existing layout had been compromised by unsympathetic alterations, including a disproportionately large central staircase, which disrupted the spatial flow and created disconnected and awkward interiors.

The brief was to reimagine the home in a way that honours its historic character, reinstating period details on the street elevation, improving the flow and functionality of the floor plan, and strengthening the connection between the main living spaces and the garden.

A key aspect of the design is the re-siting of the central staircase, restoring it to its original, historic position. At lower ground floor level, a landscaped staircase with generous planted steps forms a gentle transition from the lower floor to the rear garden, creating a seamless and inviting connection between interior and exterior.
