Notting Hill Mews

Built between 1850 and 1852 as a mews stable, the house is a rare example of a distinctly London building typology, designed originally to serve the functional needs of horses and grooms. Over the decades, it has been reshaped and repurposed through successive layers of industrial, commercial, and residential use, each leaving its mark on the fabric of the building. These adaptations tell a story of the city’s evolving social and architectural history, making the house not only a home but a tangible record of London’s past, reflecting both its practical origins and the enduring charm of the mews form.

Notting Hill Mews

The Brief

Our brief was to reimagine the home for contemporary family life, creating generous, light-filled living spaces and a seamless connection to the garden, while honouring the building’s rich past. The design responds with a confident yet respectful dialogue between old and new, reinstating key elements, and using a carefully curated palette inspired by the craftsmanship and material richness of Victorian stables.

Honest, tactile materials—stone, timber, leather, brass, ceramic tile and exposed brick—are reinterpreted with clarity and restraint, creating spaces that feel both grounded and quietly luxurious.

Rooted in heritage yet unmistakably modern, the scheme transforms the mews into a warm, enduring family home with a strong sense of place.
